The referentiality problem (weeks 2-8) and the sentence meaning problem (weeks 9-13) will be presented. In the field of referentiality, the theories of Frege, Russell, Quine and Kripke will be studied. Three candidate explanations of the meaning of linguistic sentences will then be presented: verifiability, the principle of compositionality as applied by Davidson, and the theory that the contents of linguistic sentences are logical propositions.
