1 FULLY FUNDED PHD POSITION AT POLITECNICO DI MILANO – Department of Electronics, Information and Bio-engineering

Applications are invited for 1 PhD position at the Department of Electronics, Information, and Bioengineering (DEIB) of Politecnico di Milano (Italy), on topics related to Human Computer Interaction in the context of Smart Spaces, Smart Objects, and Internet of Things applications (see details below).

 

The research activity will be coordinated by prof. Franca Garzotto – I3Lab (Interactive Innovative Interfaces Laboratory) at the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering, and will be performed in cooperation with the team of the industrial research lab of TIM/Telecom Italia “SCUBE” – Smart Social Spaces Joint Open Lab, hosted at the main campus of Politecnico di Milano.

 

Research Topic

The purpose of this research is the study, design, development and evaluation of methods, technologies and services that use innovative ICT solutions to improve the Consumers’ Experience in indoor and outdoor retail spaces. In particular, the goal is to exploit the opportunities offered by IoT technology, smart spaces, novel interaction devices, and gamification tools, to digitally enrich and connect physical products and to smoothly integrate them with multimedia contents and data. Examples of domains where these research results can be applied fashion, furniture&design, food, and “Made in Italy” products.

 

Educational goals and job opportunities of this PhD

Smart Spaces, IoT technologies, innovative interaction paradigms are becoming more and more important in many different domains. The candidate will develop competences and skills to master the complexity of i) designing innovative solutions that meet the requirements of the different stakeholders; ii) effectively integrating a wide spectrum of novel digital interactive technologies, and evaluating them. The background developed in this PhD opens highly qualified job opportunities at national and international level, in academic and industrial research contexts as well as enterprise environments.

Profile

We are looking for an excellent candidate with background at the crossroads of Information Technology and Human Computer Interaction, who is strongly motivated to explore the topics described above and is willing to collaborate with a mixed industrial-academic research team in the context of large international and national projects.

The candidate must hold, or must obtain by October 2016, a Master Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information  Engineering, Interaction Design, or Human Computer Interaction.
